Common applications include vertical hoisting devices such as elevators and cranes, where a counterweight balances the car and its expected load; in theatre stage machinery, counterweight systems use hanging weights to raise and lower scenery; in mechanical clocks and scales, weights drive or balance the mechanism; in doors and gates, counterweights balance heavy doors to ease operation.

Design and operation: The counterweight is connected by a rope or linkage to the moving load through pulleys. Its value is selected to closely match the load for efficient operation and safe margin; it must be secured, allowed to move freely, protected from overload; materials typically steel or other dense metals; dynamic balancing reduces vibrations and wear.
