Counterweights are masses used to balance a moving element or to reduce the effort required to operate a mechanism. By placing a weight at a known distance from a pivot or along a hoist line, the counterweight creates a balancing moment that offsets the load’s weight, enabling smoother operation, lower motor torque, and enhanced stability.

Counterweights appear in several forms. Fixed counterweights are integrated into the structure on one side of a lever or crane. In pulley systems, weights are attached to the moving line so that the weight on the other side balances the load being lifted. They are often made of steel blocks or concrete and are housed for safety.

Applications include elevators, where a counterweight balances the car and part of the rated load; cranes and hoists, where ballast offsets the jib and the lifted mass; and stage or film rigging and other machinery, where weights move scenery or equipment. Counterweights are also used in weighing systems and some precision instruments to provide a known reference mass.

Design considerations cover the mass, placement, and line of action to achieve the required balance versus dynamic loads. Proper sizing minimizes motor effort and energy use and reduces stressing of the drive train, while excessive or poorly placed counterweights can add inertia and space requirements. Regular inspection and maintenance are necessary to ensure safety and performance.
