Contourhatching is a drawing technique that combines contour drawing with hatching, using lines that follow the form of a subject to imply volume and value. The method aims to render three-dimensional shape through the flow of lines rather than smooth shading.

To execute contourhatching, begin with a light contour to establish the object's boundary. Then lay hatch lines that align with the surface’s contours, so the lines curve as the form turns. Vary spacing: looser spacing suggests lighter value, tighter spacing darker areas, with line density increasing in shadow. Line weight can also shift along the form to suggest edge brightness. Cross-contour lines may be added across the surface to emphasize more complex geometry.

Contourhatching is commonly used in figure drawing, portraiture, still life, and illustration, especially with ink or charcoal where solid tonal gradients are difficult. It can be combined with traditional hatching or cross-hatching, and is related to, but distinct from, smooth shading methods.

Advantages include clear line quality, control of value without smudging, and a strong graphic appearance. Limitations include the primacy of line over tonal nuance and potential stiffness if overused.
