Chondromalacia is a medical term that describes the softening and breakdown of cartilage, most commonly the cartilage on the underside of the kneecap, also known as the patella. This condition is often referred to as "runner's knee" or "moviegoer's knee" due to the pain it can cause, especially when the knee is bent for extended periods. While it most frequently affects the patellofemoral joint, chondromalacia can also occur in other joints.

The exact causes of chondromalacia are not always clear, but contributing factors can include overuse, improper alignment of the kneecap, muscle imbalances, direct injury to the knee, and certain degenerative conditions. Symptoms typically include pain around or behind the kneecap, which may worsen with activities like climbing stairs, squatting, or prolonged sitting. A grinding or popping sensation in the knee can also be present.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination and may include imaging tests such as X-rays or an MRI to assess the cartilage. Treatment aims to reduce pain and inflammation and improve the function of the knee. This often involves conservative measures like rest, ice, physical therapy to strengthen surrounding muscles and improve flexibility, and pain medication. In some cases, injections or surgery might be considered if conservative treatments are not effective.
