Condoom, also commonly spelled condom, refers to a barrier device designed to prevent pregnancy and reduce the transmission of sexually transmitted infections. They are worn during sexual activity and are typically single-use and disposable. The most common form is the male condom, a latex or synthetic sheath rolled over the erect penis; a vaginal pouch known as the female condom is inserted into the vagina.

Condooms are produced in several materials, including latex, polyurethane, and polyisoprene. Natural lambskin condoms exist but do not protect against all STIs because they are porous to viruses. Latex condoms are widely used but can be degraded by oil-based lubricants, so water-based or silicone-based lubricants are generally recommended. Non-latex options are available for people with latex allergies.

Proper use is essential for effectiveness. Always check the expiration date and package integrity, pinch the tip to leave space for semen, and roll the condom on before any ejaculation. After intercourse, hold the base while withdrawing to prevent slippage, then discard the used condom in the trash. Do not reuse or flush condoms down the toilet. Store condoms in a cool, dry place away from sharp objects or prolonged heat.

Effectiveness varies with correct use. When used correctly, condoms are highly effective at preventing pregnancy and many sexually transmitted infections, but no method is 100% protective. They are often used in combination with other contraception methods for additional pregnancy prevention and STI risk reduction.

Historically, condoms have been used for centuries in various forms, with modern latex versions becoming common in the 20th century and widely promoted as a public health measure.
