The conditioningilmiö refers to a broad set of psychological phenomena involving learning through association. It is most famously associated with classical conditioning, first described by Ivan Pavlov. In classical conditioning, a neutral stimulus that initially elicits no response becomes associated with an unconditioned stimulus that naturally elicits a response. After repeated pairings, the neutral stimulus, now a conditioned stimulus, can elicit the response on its own, which is then termed a conditioned response. For example, Pavlov's dogs learned to salivate at the sound of a bell (conditioned stimulus) because it was repeatedly paired with the presentation of food (unconditioned stimulus), which naturally caused salivation (unconditioned response).
