Conceria is the Italian term for a tannery, a facility where animal hides are transformed into leather. The word derives from conciare, to tan, and in Italian industry it can refer to both the workshop and the broader leather-tanning sector. Tanning has ancient roots, and Italian concerie have historically been located near watercourses and trade routes to facilitate processing and distribution of hides and finished leather.

The tanning process typically begins with cleaning and hydrating hides, followed by liming, fleshing, and bating to prepare the collagen fibers. Tanning stabilizes the hides through chemical treatment, using vegetable tannins, chromium salts, or other agents.
