Conceptkunst, or conceptual art, is an art form in which the idea or concept behind a work takes precedence over traditional aesthetic concerns or material production. In practice, works may consist of a statement, a protocol or instruction, a photograph, a performance, or a text-based piece. The physical object, if present at all, is often secondary to the meaning or process it embodies. The viewer’s interpretation and the surrounding context are essential to the work. In German- and Dutch-language discourse, the term conceptkunst is used to refer to this approach, which emphasizes ideas over craft.
