A computer component is any distinct part that contributes to the function of a computer system. Components are typically categorized as internal hardware components and external peripherals, and they collectively enable processing, storage, input/output, and control.

Core internal components include the central processing unit (CPU), which executes instructions; memory (RAM), which holds active data; storage devices such as hard drives or solid-state drives for long-term data; the motherboard, which provides the connections and buses that link components; the power supply, which delivers power; and cooling solutions to manage heat. Optional internal components include graphics processing units (GPUs) and expansion cards such as sound or network adapters.

External peripherals and interfaces include input devices (keyboard, mouse), output devices (monitor, printer), and external storage or network devices connected by interfaces such as USB or Ethernet. Peripherals extend a system’s capabilities without being part of the core processing and storage path.

Interfaces and form factors: Components connect through standardized interfaces. PCI Express (PCIe) is used for expansion cards and many high-speed storage devices; SATA is used for some drives; USB provides broad external connectivity; memory modules use DDR4 or DDR5; displays use HDMI or DisplayPort. Motherboards come in form factors such as ATX and microATX, which influence case size and component layout.

Selecting and upgrading components requires attention to compatibility and performance: ensure CPU socket compatibility with the motherboard, match memory type and speed with specifications, verify storage interface support, and ensure the power supply has sufficient wattage and appropriate connectors for all components.
