Compozitor is the Romanian term for a person who creates original music. In English, the closest equivalent is composer. A compozitor writes melodies, harmonies, rhythms, and musical forms, and often prepares a complete score for performance. Composers work across many genres, including classical concert music, film and television scores, opera, and popular music, writing for ensembles ranging from solo piano to full symphony orchestras.

Composers often begin with a motif or idea, develop it through sketches and improvisation, and then notate it using manuscript or computer software. They collaborate with performers, conductors, lyricists, and producers to realize the music in performance. Proficiency in harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, and rhythm, along with practical skills in rehearsal and production, is common among professional composers.

Historically, the role exists in many cultures, with a prominent Western tradition dating from the medieval and Renaissance periods through Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and modern times. In contemporary practice, composers frequently work with electronic sounds, digital tools, and multimedia formats, expanding the range of activities that fall under composition.

Education varies widely. Many composers study at conservatories or universities, then develop their craft through practice, commissions, and collaboration. The title 'compozitor' is distinct from 'arranger' or 'lyricist': an arranger adapts existing material; a lyricist writes words; a composer creates new music.
