A colposcope is a specialized medical instrument used to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva. It magnifies the view of these tissues, allowing a healthcare provider to detect abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye. The colposcope itself is not inserted into the body; instead, it remains outside, projecting a magnified image onto a screen or through eyepieces.

The examination typically involves the insertion of a speculum to open the vaginal canal. The colposcope is then positioned in front of the vulva. A weak acetic acid solution is often applied to the cervix and vagina, which causes abnormal cells to turn white, making them more apparent. A saline solution may also be used, and sometimes Lugol's iodine is applied, which stains normal cells brown but leaves abnormal cells unstained.

Colposcopy is most commonly performed when screening tests, such as a Pap smear, indicate potential abnormalities in cervical cells. It is a crucial diagnostic tool for detecting precancerous and cancerous changes in the lower female reproductive tract. Based on the colposcopic findings, a healthcare provider may recommend further tests or treatments, such as a biopsy or LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure). The procedure is generally quick and well-tolerated, with minimal discomfort.
