A cobla is a traditional Catalan wind ensemble that accompanies the Sardana, a circle dance characteristic of Catalonia. The cobla emerged in the 19th century as a specialized urban ensemble for dance music and public festivals, and it remains closely associated with Sardana circles and Catalan cultural life.

Instrumentation and sound are distinctive. A cobla typically includes a flabiol, a small wooden flute that provides the rhythmic and melodic cues, paired with a tamborí, a small drum. The wind section centers on reed instruments, most notably the tenora, an oboe-like instrument, and the tible, a clarinet-like instrument. These reeds carry the melodies and inner harmonies of the pieces. Brass and other percussion may accompany the reeds to enrich the texture, and the ensemble is often completed by additional reed players to fill out the harmony. The overall sound is characterized by bright, agile melodies and a steady dance rhythm that supports the Sardana’s steps.

Repertoire for cobla performance is primarily Sardana tunes, including danza-like pieces and accompanying variations used in social dances, ceremonies, and competitions. In addition to traditional Sardana selections, coblas may perform contemporary arrangements and commissions for festivals and formal events. Numerous coblas operate as professional groups, while many towns also maintain amateur ensembles as part of local cultural life.
