Civilingenjörsdesign is a multidisciplinary design approach used primarily within Swedish civil engineering education, referring to the integration of engineering analysis, architectural consideration, and sustainability principles into the design of infrastructure projects. The term combines “civilingenjör” (civil engineer) with “design” (design, planning).

The concept emerged as part of the reform of Sweden’s higher education system in the 1990s, coinciding with the consolidation of engineering programs into the Bachelor–Master structure. It reflects a holistic view of engineering design that goes beyond pure structural calculations to include economic, environmental, and social impact assessments.

In practice, a civilingenjörsdesign curriculum typically spans five years, providing a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree. Coursework covers advanced structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, transportation systems, water resources, and environmental engineering, supplemented by project‑based modules that emphasize the entire design life cycle.

Compared with traditional engineering design courses in other countries, civilingenjörsdesign places additional emphasis on integrated software tools such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and computer‑aided design (CAD) systems. It also encourages collaborative work across multiple engineering disciplines, reflecting the complexity of modern infrastructure projects.

Applications of civilingenjörsdesign are broad. Engineers trained in this discipline work on the design of bridges, highways, water supply networks, and urban development projects, ensuring that structures meet performance standards while also adhering to regulatory, economic, and environmental requirements.
