Cinematograaf is the Dutch term for the cinematographer, the film crew member who leads the camera and light departments and is responsible for the visual recording of a motion picture or television production. In English, the role is commonly called director of photography (DoP). The cinematograaf collaborates with the director to translate the script into images, establishing the film's visual concept, tone, and atmosphere.

Typical responsibilities include selecting cameras, lenses, and other optical gear; crafting lighting schemes; deciding on shot composition, camera angles, and movement; supervising the camera crew, focus pullers, gaffer, grip; and ensuring proper exposure, color, and continuity from scene to scene. On digital productions, the cinematograaf also works with sensor choices, recording formats, and color pipelines—often using LUTs and on-set monitors to preview the look.

The cinematograaf works closely with production design, costumes, and makeup to maintain the film's look; and with postproduction to ensure a consistent grade. The role has evolved from the early days of cinema to accommodate digital imaging, high dynamic range, and complex visual effects, while keeping storytelling at the forefront.

Notable practitioners include international figures such as Roger Deakins, Emmanuel Lubezki, and Vittorio Storaro; Dutch cinematographers such as Robby Müller are recognized for their contributions to European and American cinema.
