Chromiumfree is a term used for products or processes that contain no chromium or chromium compounds, and in practice often emphasizes avoidance of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) due to its toxicity. The term is applied across several industries where chromium-bearing substances pose health or environmental risks, including metal finishing, pigments and coatings, cosmetics, and construction materials.

In metal finishing and coating, chromiumfree approaches replace chromium-containing platings and sealants with alternative metals or polymers. Examples include nickel, zinc, copper, and tin-based coatings, or inorganic and organic finishes designed for corrosion resistance and appearance. In anodizing and passivation, chromiumfree formulations avoid Cr(VI) treatments, favoring phosphate-based or organic sealants and other non-chromium methods where feasible.

In pigments and dyes, chromiumfree colorants avoid chromium-based pigments such as certain chromates, instead using titanium dioxide, iron oxides, organic pigments, or other inorganic alternatives.

Regulatory and health considerations have driven chromiumfree approaches, particularly where Cr(VI) is restricted or prohibited. Hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen, and many regions regulate its use under environmental and consumer-safety rules (for example, RoHS and REACH in electronics and related sectors; cosmetics regulations addressing chromium allergies). Adoption of chromiumfree technologies can reduce hazard exposure and environmental impact, but may involve trade-offs in performance, cost, and supply chains. The term remains a general industry label rather than a standardized standard.
