Chromeplate is the process of applying a thin layer of chromium to a metal surface by electroplating. The resulting finish is valued for its bright appearance, corrosion resistance, and hardness, as well as for creating a smooth, easy-to-clean surface.

In decorative chrome plating, a substrate such as steel, aluminum, brass, or zinc alloy is first cleaned and prepared, then receives a copper underlayer and a nickel strike to promote adhesion and a smooth finish, and finally is coated with chromium to achieve the bright, mirror-like appearance. Hard chrome plating, which emphasizes wear resistance, generally uses similar underlayers but deposits a thicker chromium layer and is applied to components that experience high abrasion and load, such as machinery parts, hydraulic cylinders, and valve stems.

Chromeplating is commonly used on automotive trim, plumbing fixtures, hand tools, bicycle components, and various fittings. Substrates can include steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and copper alloys, with process parameters chosen to balance brightness, hardness, and thickness according to the intended service.

Advantages of chromeplate include improved corrosion resistance, increased hardness, reduced friction, and ease of cleaning, along with an aesthetically distinctive finish. Limitations include the brittleness of the chromium layer under certain conditions, possible failure if adhesion is poor, and the need for precise control of electrodeposition and surface preparation. Environmental and health considerations are significant, as traditional chromium plating uses hexavalent chromium compounds that pose risks to workers and ecosystems; many regions regulate emissions and waste treatment, and alternatives such as trivalent chromium processes are being developed and adopted.
