It consists of a continuously moving cable loop, suspended between two or more stations, with chairs attached at regular intervals. These chairs are usually open seats that can accommodate one or more passengers, though enclosed cabins are also used in some systems.

The primary purpose of a chairlift is to provide efficient, safe, and quick access to elevated recreational or sightseeing areas. They are commonly installed in ski resorts to ferry skiers and snowboarders from base areas to higher elevations. In addition to skiing, chairlifts are employed in scenic areas for sightseeing, mountain access, and environmental monitoring.

Chairlifts operate using a motor-driven cable that circulates over sheaves and towers, with some systems employing regenerative drives to reduce energy consumption. Chairlifts are favored for their ability to carry passengers efficiently while minimizing environmental impact compared to road-based transportation up mountainous regions.
