Cestodet is not a standard term in parasitology; in most literature the organisms are called cestodes or tapeworms. Cestodes are a group of parasitic flatworms within the class Cestoda of the phylum Platyhelminthes. They are endoparasites that reside primarily in the digestive tracts of vertebrate hosts, though larval stages can inhabit intermediate hosts such as muscle, liver, or body cavities.

Morphology and biology: Cestodes are segmented, with a body that consists of a scolex (head) used for attachment, a neck, and a strobila made of proglottids. They lack a digestive system and absorb nutrients through their tegument directly from the host’s intestinal contents. Proglottids mature as they move away from the scolex, producing and releasing eggs. Cestodes are typically hermaphroditic, containing both male and female reproductive organs within each proglottid.

Life cycle and transmission: Most cestodes have a two-host life cycle involving a definitive host (usually a vertebrate) where the adult tapeworm lives, and one or more intermediate hosts that harbor larval forms. Humans can be definitive hosts for some species or accidental intermediate hosts for others. Transmission to humans often occurs by ingestion of undercooked or raw meat containing cysticerci (larval cysts) or, in some species, by ingestion of eggs from contaminated food or water.

Clinical relevance: Human cestode infections can cause taeniasis (adult tapeworms in the intestine) and various forms of larval disease, such as cysticercosis or hydatid disease, depending on the species and life-cycle dynamics. Diagnosis generally relies on stool examination for eggs or proglottids, serology, or imaging for larval disease. Treatments include praziquantel or niclosamide, with surgical or medical management for disseminated cysts in some cases. Prevention centers on proper cooking of meat, meat inspection, sanitation, and good hygiene.
