The term is used to distinguish external, environmental, or contextual cues from cell-intrinsic factors that arise from within the cell itself. In many texts the concept is described with the hyphenated form cell-extrinsic; cellextrinsic appears as a variant in some sources.

Sources of cellextrinsic influence include the extracellular matrix and its mechanical properties, neighboring cells, circulating hormones or cytokines, growth factors, nutrients, and oxygen tension. Mechanical cues such as substrate stiffness and shear stress, as well as vascular or stromal inputs, can modulate signaling pathways and gene expression in resident cells.
