Categorizing is the process of organizing objects, ideas, or data into groups called categories based on shared characteristics or defined criteria. The purpose is to simplify complex information, improve retrieval, support reasoning, and facilitate communication. Categorizing can be done by humans, by machines, or through hybrid workflows.

In practice, categorization relies on features, granularity, and structure. Categories may be arranged hierarchically, forming taxonomies, or exist as flat sets. Methods range from rule-based and manual tagging to automated techniques such as supervised learning, unsupervised clustering, and probabilistic models. Top-down approaches impose a predefined taxonomy, while bottom-up methods build categories from observed data.

Common applications include library and information organization, product categorization in commerce, document and image classification, spam and sentiment filtering, and knowledge management. In everyday life, categorizing supports memory, comparison, and decision making.

Key challenges include ambiguity and overlap between categories, evolving domains that require updates, inconsistent or sparse metadata, bias in training data, and scalability concerns. Evaluation often uses metrics such as precision, recall, and F1 score, along with inter-annotator agreement for human labeling.

Historically, categorization has both philosophical and scientific dimensions, from Aristotle's categories to modern data-driven taxonomies used in information systems.
