Carpetes, the plural of carpete, is the Portuguese term for floor coverings commonly called carpets in English. They are designed to cover floors to provide thermal insulation, comfort underfoot, sound reduction, and decorative appeal. Carpetes come in a wide range of sizes, pile heights, materials, and backing systems.

Materials include natural fibers such as wool and sisal, and synthetic fibers such as nylon, polypropylene, and polyester, as well as blends. Construction methods include tufted (the most prevalent in modern manufacturing), woven (including traditional counts like Wilton and Axminster), and flat-woven varieties such as kilim. Pile height and density affect durability, appearance, and softness.

Styles range from contemporary solids to intricate traditional patterns, with color and motif reflecting regional crafts. Carpetes can be installed wall-to-wall in rooms, used as area rugs, or produced as modular carpet tiles. Backing materials, such as latex or fabric scrim, provide stability and attachment.

Maintenance is generally periodic; routine vacuuming helps prevent soil buildup, and spills should be addressed promptly using appropriate stain removers. Professional cleaning is recommended every 12 to 24 months for heavily used spaces, depending on traffic and fiber type. Proper underlay can extend life and improve comfort.

Historically, carpets originated in areas of the Middle East and Asia and spread to Europe and beyond through trade routes. The machine-made carpet era began in the 19th century, increasing accessibility. Contemporary carpetes emphasize sustainability, with options using recycled fibers and lower-impact dyes.
