Capacitortype refers to the classification of capacitors based on their construction, materials, and electrical characteristics. The type of capacitor determines its applications, performance limits, and suitability for specific circuits.

Common capacitortypes include electrolytic, ceramic, film, and supercapacitor. Electrolytic capacitors use a liquid or gel electrolyte to provide high capacitance values in a compact package and are polarized, making them suitable for power supply filtering and energy storage. Ceramic capacitors employ a ceramic dielectric and come in various dielectric classes (Class I and Class II); they offer low ESR, small size, and are widely used for decoupling, coupling, and timing applications. Film capacitors use plastic film dielectrics such as polyester or polypropylene and provide stable capacitance, low self‑resonant frequency, and high pulse handling, making them common in audio, power electronics, and precision timing. Supercapacitors, also known as ultracapacitors, use carbon-based porous electrodes and an electrolyte to achieve extremely high capacitance (farads) at low voltage; they are used for energy harvesting, fast charge/discharge, and backup power.

Other specialized capacitortypes exist for particular use cases: tantalum capacitors, which are a subclass of electrolytic with a tantalum oxide dielectric, offer improved stability over aluminum electrolytics; multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), which stack ceramic layers and metal electrodes for high capacitance density; and electrolytic polymer capacitors, which use a gelled polymer electrolyte to reduce ESR and size. Capacitors may also be categorized by voltage rating, temperature stability, equivalent series resistance (ESR), and frequency response.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression, radio-frequency (RF) decoupling, and analog filtering all benefit from selecting the appropriate capacitortype. Designers evaluate parameters such as capacitance tolerance, temperature coefficient, leakage current, and lifetime when choosing the correct type. The variety of capacitortypes allows electronic circuits to meet diverse requirements ranging from low-power handheld devices to high-power industrial control units.
