Cameraman is a technician who operates the camera during the production of film, television, or video. They are responsible for capturing the visual content according to the director’s vision and the director of photography’s plan. The term is gendered in some contexts; many productions use camera operator or cameraperson. Responsibilities include choosing framing, focus, exposure, and camera movement.

On set, cameramen work closely with the director, the director of photography, and lighting technicians. They follow shot lists or blocking, select lenses and filters, manage camera settings, and execute movements using tripods, dollies, cranes, Steadicams, or handheld rigs. They may also adapt to changing light and weather, maintain continuity between takes, and ensure safety when operating in crowded or hazardous environments.

Training and qualifications vary. Many camera operators study film, journalism, or communications at a college or conservatory, while others learn through apprenticeships and on-the-job experience. Essential skills include a good eye for composition, steady technique, spatial awareness, technical proficiency with cameras and accessories, and the ability to work under pressure. Safety and proper cable management are important on busy sets.

In industry practice, cameramen work across genres, including narrative film, television productions, news gathering, and event coverage. In film and television, the role is typically part of a crew led by the director of photography and a production team; in news, they may be part of an ENG unit. Professional groups and unions in many countries set standards, training requirements, and labor contracts.
