Bíofoszforeltávolítás, often translated as biological phosphorus removal, is a wastewater treatment process designed to reduce the amount of phosphorus discharged into receiving waters. Phosphorus is a nutrient that can contribute to eutrophication, leading to algal blooms and oxygen depletion in lakes and rivers, harming aquatic ecosystems.

This biological process utilizes microorganisms that naturally consume and store phosphorus within their cells under specific operational conditions, typically alternating anaerobic and aerobic environments. In the anaerobic phase, certain bacteria, known as phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs), ferment organic matter and release stored phosphorus into the wastewater. Subsequently, in the aerobic phase, these PAOs take up a significantly larger amount of phosphorus from the wastewater than they released, incorporating it into their biomass. This enriched biomass is then removed from the system through sludge settling or filtration, effectively extracting phosphorus from the wastewater stream.

These methods are generally cost-effective compared to chemical phosphorus removal methods, as they rely on biological activity rather than expensive chemical additives.
