A butt joint is a woodworking joint where two pieces of material are joined end to end. This is one of the simplest woodworking joints. The two pieces are typically placed at a right angle to each other, or in a straight line. The strength of a butt joint is dependent on the method of fastening and the type of adhesive used. Without reinforcement, a butt joint is generally considered weak.

Butt joints can be reinforced in several ways to increase their strength. Common reinforcement methods include the use of nails, screws, dowels, or biscuits. Glue is almost always used in conjunction with mechanical fasteners to improve the bond. In some applications, particularly with sheet goods like plywood or particleboard, a butt joint might be reinforced with a backing strip, which is a piece of material attached to the back of the joint.

Butt joints are often used in furniture making, framing, and general construction where a strong joint is not the primary concern or where they are adequately reinforced. For example, in cabinet construction, butt joints are frequently used to assemble carcasses, with screws and glue providing sufficient strength. They are also common in framing, where members are joined end-to-end. The simplicity of creating a butt joint makes it a quick and economical choice for many projects. However, for applications requiring high structural integrity or aesthetic appeal, more complex joints like mortise and tenon or dovetail joints are often preferred.
