They vary in color and pattern but are generally robust snakes with a distinct, heavy head. Bushmasters are primarily terrestrial but can climb into low vegetation; they hunt using ambush tactics, feeding on small mammals, birds, and occasionally amphibians. The venom is a potent hemotoxic cocktail that can cause swelling, tissue damage, bleeding disorders, and, in severe cases, shock. They give birth to live young. Their habitat includes tropical rainforests, deciduous forests, and forest edges, and they are typically shy and elusive around humans. The IUCN regards Lachesis muta as Least Concern, though local populations may be threatened by habitat loss and persecution.
