The burkolóhéja, scientific name Circaetus gallicus, is a medium-large bird of prey found in the Old World. It is also known by its English name, Short-toed Snake Eagle. This raptor is characterized by its broad wings, relatively small head, and powerful legs equipped with long talons. Its plumage is typically brown on the upperparts and pale on the underparts, often with dark barring. A distinctive feature is the presence of a white band across the tail.

The burkolóhéja inhabits a wide range, from Southern Europe and North Africa across to Asia. It prefers open or semi-open habitats such as grasslands, savannas, and agricultural landscapes, often near woodland or rocky areas. Its diet consists primarily of reptiles, with snakes forming the majority of its prey. It also consumes lizards and occasionally small mammals or birds.

This eagle hunts by soaring high in the sky or by perching on elevated vantage points, scanning the ground for movement. Once prey is spotted, it dives down with remarkable speed and precision. The burkolóhéja is a migratory species, with populations in temperate regions undertaking long journeys to warmer climates for the winter. Breeding usually occurs once a year, with a clutch of one to three eggs laid in a nest constructed in trees or on cliffs. The species is generally solitary outside of the breeding season.
