Brystverk, also known as a breastwork, is a low protective barrier used in fortifications and field fortifications to shield infantry from enemy fire while providing a firing position. The term describes a wall, mound, or screen built to chest height or thereabout, hence the name. Materials commonly used include earth, stone, timber, or gabions, and it is often integrated with trenches, redoubts, or parapets.

Construction and design vary, but a typical brystverk is lighter and shorter than a full rampart. It is built to deflect or absorb small-arms fire and to conceal the soldiers behind it. The facing side is usually inclined or faced with compact material to resist bombardment, and the top may include a firing step or loopholes for rifles or muskets. Temporary versions can be assembled quickly with earth and fascines, while more durable forms employ masonry, timber revetments, or gabioned walls.

History and use: breastworks have appeared in many periods of warfare, especially in siege operations and mobile field conflicts from antiquity through the 19th century. They were favored for their relative ease and speed of construction, allowing troops to advance or hold positions under cover. With the development of heavy artillery and more elaborate trench systems, traditional low breastworks became less common in modern frontline fortifications, though the principle of protected firing positions persists in later trench and parapet designs.
