These spaces typically combine affordable studio or workshop space with shared facilities such as meeting rooms, rehearsal spaces, digital equipment, and common areas. In addition to workspaces, many broedplaatsen offer programs like residencies, exhibitions, performances, open studios, and mentoring, aiming to lower barriers to entry and stimulate cross-disciplinary exchange.

Historically, broedplaatsen emerged in Dutch urban policy as a means to revitalize neighborhoods, foster cultural production, and support creative entrepreneurship. Since the 1990s, municipalities and cultural authorities have promoted or established such spaces as part of broader efforts to nurture the cultural economy, innovation, and social vitality. The model is often implemented through public-private partnerships and partnerships with housing or cultural organizations.
