A brickmaker is a person or entity involved in the manufacturing of bricks. Bricks are a common building material, typically rectangular in shape, produced from clay or shale which is then fired in a kiln or dried in the sun. The process of brickmaking has a long history, dating back to ancient civilizations.

Historically, brickmaking was a labor-intensive craft, often carried out by small workshops or individual artisans. The raw materials, primarily clay, would be dug from the earth, mixed with water and sometimes other additives like sand or straw, and then molded into shape. These green bricks would then be air-dried or fired in simple kilns to harden them.

Modern brick manufacturing is largely an industrial process. Large quantities of clay are extracted, processed by machines to achieve a uniform consistency, and then extruded through molds to form the bricks. These bricks are then transported by conveyor belts to drying chambers and subsequently fired in large, continuous tunnel kilns at very high temperatures. This industrial approach allows for mass production and consistent quality.

The role of a brickmaker can range from the skilled craftsperson in a small, traditional operation to a large company operating extensive manufacturing facilities. The demand for bricks is closely tied to the construction industry, making brickmakers sensitive to economic cycles. The type of brick produced can vary widely, from standard building bricks to decorative or specialized bricks used for specific architectural purposes.
