Bremseplatte, commonly referred to as the backing plate in drum brake systems, is a rigid metal plate attached to the wheel hub. It provides the mounting and support surface for the brake hardware and serves as a backing against which the brake shoes press during braking. The backing plate is located behind the brake drum and remains stationary while the drum and wheel rotate.

In a typical drum brake assembly, the wheel cylinder is mounted to the backing plate, and the brake shoes are anchored to it via springs and fittings. When the brake is applied, the shoes move outward and press against the inner surface of the rotating drum, generating friction to slow or stop the vehicle. The backing plate also carries dust shields, seals, and sometimes anti-squeal components, helping to protect the mechanism from contamination and heat.

Construction and variations: Bremseplatten are usually made from stamped steel and may include reinforcing features or a protective coating to resist corrosion. They are designed to withstand heat and mechanical loads without deforming. Some designs integrate additional features such as a dust shield or mounting boss for the wheel cylinder.

Maintenance and replacement: The backing plate itself is not a friction surface, but it can corrode, become bent, or suffer damage from impacts. It can also be affected by leaks from wheel cylinders or contaminated brake fluid. If the backing plate is damaged or heavily corroded, it should be replaced, and the entire drum brake assembly may need inspection and service to ensure proper drum fit and function.
