Breathfocused is a foundational element of many mindfulness-based interventions, including programs designed to reduce stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, as well as to improve sleep and concentration. It can be practiced privately or guided by instructors, apps, or audio recordings. The approach emphasizes nonjudgmental awareness and acceptance of present-moment experience, including any physical sensations or emotions that arise.

Benefits often include enhanced attention regulation, reduced rumination, and improved emotional regulation. Limitations may include initial difficulty for some individuals, potential distress when focusing on breathing in certain contexts (such as trauma exposure), and the fact that breathfocused practices are not a substitute for professional treatment when clinically indicated.
