Boraxiet is a rare and distinctive mineral that belongs to the borate group, characterized by its unique crystal structure and chemical composition. The mineral was first identified in 1966 in the Boraxovaya mine in the Ural Mountains of Russia, though it was later discovered in other locations, including the Tincalayu mine in Argentina and the Boron area of California, USA. Boraxiet typically forms as colorless to white, tabular crystals that often exhibit a pearly luster. Its chemical formula is Na₂B₄O₇·10H₂O, which is identical to that of the more common mineral borax, but boraxiet differs in its crystal habit and physical properties.

Boraxiet crystallizes in the monoclinic system and is known for its well-developed, often elongated or tabular crystals that can appear in clusters or as isolated specimens. The mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of approximately 2 to 2.5, making it easily scratchable with a fingernail. It has a white streak and is transparent to translucent, with a vitreous to pearly luster. Boraxiet is soluble in water and exhibits effervescence when treated with acids, a characteristic shared with other borate minerals.

Occurrences of boraxiet are generally associated with evaporite deposits, where it forms in arid environments through the evaporation of borate-rich waters. Due to its rarity, boraxiet is not commonly encountered in collections, and specimens are highly sought after by mineralogists and collectors. The mineral’s scientific study contributes to the understanding of borate mineralogy and the geological processes that lead to its formation.
