Bombardments are sustained attacks in which a target area is repeatedly fired upon with artillery, naval guns, or aircraft-delivered ordnance. The aim is to weaken defenders, destroy equipment and infrastructure, and disrupt the enemy’s ability to wage war. Bombardment can occur during sieges, as a prelude to assault, or as part of a broader campaign. The term covers artillery bombardments, naval bombardments from ships offshore, aerial bombardments by bombers or missiles, and combined-arms bombardments.

Techniques and scope vary. Artillery bombardment relies on large-caliber guns to deliver long-range fire; naval bombardment uses ships to shell shore targets; aerial bombardment employs aircraft to drop bombs or launch missiles. Bombardments may be selective, targeting specific military objectives, or more general and indiscriminate, especially in urban areas or near civilians. The overwhelming goal is to degrade military capabilities while shaping the battlefield.

Effects are often far-reaching. Structural destruction, disruption of communications and logistics, civilian casualties, and displacement can follow sustained bombardment. Environmental damage and long-term urban decline may also result. International humanitarian law regulates bombardments; the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precautions require combatants to spare civilians and avoid excessive harm relative to the military objective.

Historically, bombardments have shaped warfare and strategy. The long artillery bombardments of sieges in the 19th century; the extensive aerial bombardments of World War II, including city bombing campaigns like the London Blitz and Dresden; and various naval bombardments in earlier conflicts illustrate their prominence. In contemporary conflicts, bombardments remain a contentious and heavily regulated aspect of armed conflict.
