The bokomslag serves several functions: protecting the binding, identifying the work, and attracting readers through art and typography.

The front cover usually displays the title, the author, and a principal image or design. The back cover often contains a blurb, an author bio, a publisher logo, an ISBN, and a barcode. The spine shows the title and author to help identify the book on shelves.

Design and production: Dust jackets are usually made of paper with printed images and may be glossy or matte; they can be laminated and sometimes include flaps that fold over the edges and contain additional information or a brief author note. In paperback editions the cover is printed directly on the card stock, while hardcover editions combine a case with a removable dust jacket.
