Blåssammandragningar refers to involuntary contractions of the bladder muscle, the detrusor. These contractions can occur at various times, sometimes leading to a sudden and strong urge to urinate. This urge may be difficult to suppress, and if not addressed promptly, it can result in urinary incontinence, also known as urge incontinence.

The condition is often associated with an overactive bladder (OAB). Symptoms of OAB include frequent urination, a sudden and compelling need to urinate, and nocturia, which is waking up at night to urinate. Blåssammandragningar are the underlying mechanism causing the urgency and frequency experienced by individuals with OAB.

Several factors can contribute to the development of blåssammandragningar. These can include neurological conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson's disease, which affect the nerves controlling bladder function. Urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or bladder cancer can also irritate the bladder and trigger these contractions. Furthermore, certain medications, excessive fluid intake, or constipation can exacerbate the problem. In some cases, the cause of blåssammandragningar may remain unknown, a condition termed idiopathic overactive bladder.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and potentially urodynamic testing to assess bladder function. Treatment strategies aim to reduce the frequency and intensity of bladder contractions and may include behavioral therapies like bladder training, pelvic floor exercises, and dietary modifications. Medications that relax the bladder muscle are also commonly prescribed. In more severe or persistent cases, other interventions such as botulinum toxin injections into the bladder muscle or sacral nerve stimulation may be considered.
