A bläckställ, a Swedish term, refers to an inkstand or inkwell set. Historically, these were essential desktop items for anyone who used quill pens or dip pens for writing. A typical bläckställ would include one or more containers for ink, often made of glass, ceramic, or metal. Alongside the ink containers, there would usually be a recess or holder for pens, and sometimes compartments for other writing implements like sealing wax, a penknife for sharpening quills, or sand for drying ink.

The design of bläckställ varied greatly depending on the era and the materials available. Elaborate, decorative pieces were common among the wealthy, often crafted from precious metals or inlaid with ivory or other fine materials. Simpler, more functional designs were used in offices and educational settings. The ink itself would be a liquid, often black or sepia, requiring replenishment as it was used up or evaporated.

The advent of the fountain pen and later the ballpoint pen significantly reduced the need for traditional inkstands.
