Bismutgermanat, also known as bismuth germanate, is an inorganic oxide with the chemical formula Bi4Ge3O12. It is a dense, transparent ceramic that crystallizes in a garnet-related structure and can be obtained as single crystals or polycrystalline material. The compound is valued primarily for its scintillation properties, making it a common choice for gamma-ray and nuclear radiation detectors.

Physical and optical properties include a high density of about 7.1 g/cm3 and a relatively high effective atomic number due to bismuth, which provides strong stopping power for high-energy photons. Bi4Ge3O12 is non-hygroscopic and chemically stable in typical detector environments. In scintillation applications, it emits blue light with a peak near 480 nm, has a light yield around 8,000 photons per MeV, and exhibits a decay time on the order of 300 nanoseconds.

Synthesis and crystal growth are typically achieved by solid-state reaction of Bi2O3 and GeO2, followed by crystal growth using methods such as the Czochralski process or flux growth to produce high-quality single crystals. Impurities and dopants can influence light yield and decay characteristics.

Applications of bismutgermanat are mainly in radiation detection. It is widely used as a scintillator in medical imaging (notably PET scanners), gamma-ray spectroscopy, and certain high-energy physics calorimeters, where its high density and favorable emission properties contribute to effective gamma detection.

Safety and handling follow standard practices for inorganic oxides. Bismuth compounds are generally considered to be of low toxicity relative to many heavy metal oxides, but appropriate laboratory precautions apply.
