A bioprosthesis, often referred to as a bioprosthetic valve or bioprosthetic device, is a medical implant made from biological materials rather than synthetic or mechanical components. These devices are primarily used in cardiovascular surgery, particularly in the replacement of heart valves, though they may also be applied in other areas of the body. Bioprostheses are designed to mimic the natural structure and function of biological tissues, offering a more physiological alternative to traditional mechanical prostheses.

The most common type of bioprosthesis is the bioprosthetic heart valve, which is used to replace diseased or damaged heart valves. These valves are typically constructed from animal tissues, such as porcine (pig) heart valves or bovine (cow) pericardium. The materials are treated to enhance durability and reduce the risk of rejection by the patient’s immune system. Bioprostheses are favored in certain patient populations, such as elderly individuals or those with bleeding risks, because they do not require lifelong anticoagulant therapy, unlike mechanical valves.

One of the primary advantages of bioprostheses is their biocompatibility, meaning they are less likely to trigger an immune response compared to synthetic materials. However, they are not as durable as mechanical valves and may require replacement after approximately 10 to 15 years, depending on the patient’s age, health, and the specific type of bioprosthesis used. Another consideration is the risk of structural degeneration over time, which can lead to valve dysfunction.

Bioprostheses are also used in other applications, such as vascular grafts and artificial tendons, where biological materials are preferred for their integration with surrounding tissues. Advances in tissue engineering and biomaterial science continue to improve the longevity and functionality of bioprostheses, expanding their potential use in medical treatments.
