Many hold advanced degrees in bioethics, medical ethics, or philosophy and receive clinical or research training. Core topics include patient autonomy, informed consent, privacy, justice in resource allocation, and the responsible conduct of research.

Bioethics covers clinical ethics, research ethics, public health ethics, genetics and reproductive technologies, neuroscience, end-of-life care, and environmental or global health issues. Challenges include reconciling cultural differences, translating theory into practice, and balancing competing values in policy decisions.
