Binnenpatio is a Dutch architectural term for a private interior courtyard enclosed by surrounding buildings. This space is usually open to the sky, though it may be partially covered by a glass or translucent roof in modern designs, and it provides daylight, ventilation, and a sheltered outdoor area for residents. In historic Dutch urban blocks, the binnenpatio often forms the quiet heart of the block and guides the arrangement of rooms or apartments around it.

Design and features commonly include a roughly rectangular or irregular shape, surrounded by corridors, stairwells, or ground-floor rooms. The paving is typically brick or stone, with possible planting, seating, or a small water feature. The courtyard may be accessed from multiple interior rooms and serves as a private, shared outdoor space.

Historically, binnenpatio spaces reflect a broader tradition of interior courtyards in European architecture. In the Netherlands, they appeared in urban housing blocks from the early modern period onward, and hofjes—compact residential complexes organized around an inner court—exemplify the social and communal function of these spaces. In the 20th century, the concept persisted in social housing and later in modernist designs, where light wells or atria bring daylight to interior rooms in dense city fabrics.

Today, the term is primarily used in the Netherlands and Belgium and in architectural writing in Dutch. The core idea remains a protected, inward-facing open space that enhances light, ventilation, and social interaction within a building.
