Many billedbøger feature simple, repetitive text and large, expressive images that help children connect spoken language with visual cues. Some titles are wordless, relying entirely on pictures, while others use brief sentences or dialogue.

Design and format are important elements. The layout prioritizes images, with generous margins and clear typography. Artwork spans a wide spectrum—from bold graphic styles to delicate watercolors—reflecting a variety of illustration traditions. Optional features such as lift-the-flap elements, die-cuts, or textures may be used to engage young readers.

Uses and purpose: billedbøger support early literacy, vocabulary development, and narrative understanding. They are commonly used at home, in libraries, and in early childhood education settings, where adults read aloud, name objects in the pictures, and invite children to describe what they see. They can introduce everyday experiences, friends and family, emotions, and moral themes.

History and context: picture books have a long, global history, with modern forms developing through the 19th and 20th centuries.
