Bildcell is a Swedish word that translates to "picture cell" or "image cell." It refers to a single, indivisible unit of a digital image. In essence, it is the smallest controllable element of a picture represented on a screen. Each bildcell has a specific position within the image grid and a defined color value.

The concept of the bildcell is fundamental to digital imaging and display technologies. When an image is captured by a digital camera or rendered by a computer, it is broken down into a grid of these individual bildcells. The number of bildcells in an image determines its resolution; a higher number of bildcells generally results in a more detailed and sharper image.

In color displays, each bildcell is typically composed of sub-bildcells, most commonly red, green, and blue (RGB).
