Betahydroxy acids, often abbreviated as BHAs, are a class of organic compounds. They are characterized by the presence of a hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to the beta-carbon atom relative to a carboxyl group (-COOH). This structural feature distinguishes them from alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), where the hydroxyl group is on the alpha-carbon.

The most well-known and widely used BHA in skincare is salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is derived from willow bark and is known for its exfoliating properties. Unlike AHAs, which are generally water-soluble, BHAs like salicylic acid are lipid-soluble. This lipophilicity allows them to penetrate the pores of the skin, which are filled with sebum (oil).

This ability to penetrate oily pores makes BHAs particularly effective for addressing concerns like acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. By exfoliating the skin from within the pore lining, they help to unclog pores and reduce inflammation. BHAs also possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, further contributing to their efficacy in managing acne.

Beyond salicylic acid, other BHAs include tropic acid and mandelic acid, though these are less commonly encountered in consumer products. The exfoliating action of BHAs works by weakening the bonds that hold dead skin cells together, allowing them to shed more easily. This process can lead to smoother skin texture, a more even skin tone, and a reduction in the appearance of fine lines over time. Due to their exfoliating nature, it is important to introduce BHAs gradually into a skincare routine and use sun protection, as they can increase skin sensitivity to the sun.
