Behavior change refers to the processes by which individuals or groups adopt new behaviors, abandon old ones, or modify current patterns. It encompasses cognitive, affective, and behavioral changes and occurs across health, safety, environment, and social domains. Behavior change is the focus of disciplines including psychology, public health, and behavioral economics. Theoretical frameworks aim to understand determinants and guide interventions. Common models include the Theory of Planned Behavior, which emphasizes intention, attitudes, norms, and perceived behavioral control; the Transtheoretical Model, which describes stages of change; Social Cognitive Theory, which highlights self-efficacy and observational learning; and the COM-B model, which identifies capability, opportunity, and motivation as prerequisites for behavior.

Interventions employ behavior change techniques such as goal setting, self-monitoring, feedback, prompts, contingency management, social support, and environmental restructuring. Nudges, incentives, education, and policy measures can complement strategies. Effective programs often combine techniques, tailor to the target population, and consider determinants at individual, interpersonal, organizational, and societal levels. Measurement of change relies on self-reports, diaries, ecological momentary assessment, and objective data, with process evaluations to understand mechanisms.

Challenges include sustaining long-term change, addressing social determinants, cultural relevance, and potential ethical concerns related to autonomy, equity, and privacy. Behavior change remains a dynamic field, with ongoing research into more effective, scalable, and ethically sound approaches across settings such as healthcare, workplaces, schools, and communities.
