Beautybushes are a group of deciduous shrubs belonging to the genus Kolkwitzia, with Kolkwitzia amabilis being the most commonly known species. Native to China, this ornamental shrub is prized for its attractive spring bloom. Beautybushes typically grow to a height and spread of 5 to 10 feet, forming a graceful, arching habit. The leaves are opposite, oval-shaped, and about 1 to 3 inches long. In late spring to early summer, the plant produces a profusion of delicate, trumpet-shaped flowers. These flowers are typically pale pink with a yellow throat and have a slightly sweet fragrance. They appear in clusters along the branches, creating a stunning visual display.

After the flowers fade, the plant develops small, bristly fruits that persist into winter. The bark of mature beautybushes is also noteworthy, exfoliating in thin strips, adding textural interest to the landscape. Beautybushes prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. They are relatively low-maintenance once established and are often used as specimen plants, in shrub borders, or as informal hedges. While generally hardy, they may benefit from some winter protection in colder climates. Pruning is best done after flowering to avoid removing potential flower buds for the following year.
