Basaalmembranaasta is a term used in histology to refer to the basal membrane layer that underlies many epithelial and endothelial tissues. It is a key component of the basement membrane that anchors epithelial layers to the underlying connective tissue and helps organize tissue structure and function.

The basement membrane consists of two main parts: the basal lamina, which is secreted by epithelial cells and lies closest to them, and the reticular lamina, produced by surrounding fibroblasts. The basal lamina contains laminins, type IV collagen, nidogen (entactin), and heparan sulfate proteoglycans such as perlecan. Type VII collagen forms anchoring fibrils that connect the basement membrane to the underlying connective tissue, helping to stabilize the boundary.

Functions of the basaalmembranaasta include providing mechanical support, governing cell polarity and migration, guiding tissue organization during development and repair, and acting as a selective barrier for filtration in organs such as the kidney. In the skin, the basal membrane assists in attaching the epidermis to the dermis and participates in wound healing and tissue regeneration.

Clinical relevance encompasses a range of diseases associated with basement membrane defects. Epidermolysis bullosa can arise from mutations in laminin, collagen, or related components, leading to fragile skin. Alport syndrome involves mutations in type IV collagen that affect the glomerular basement membrane in the kidney, causing progressive kidney disease. Diabetic nephropathy often features thickening and structural changes of basement membranes in vascular beds. In cancer, degradation of basement membranes can facilitate tumor invasion and metastasis.
