bantoue
Bantoue is a flowering plant belonging to the family Myrtaceae. The species, scientifically named Bantuea integrifolia, was first described in 1878 by the botanist Friedrich Ziesemann. It is native to the tropical lowlands of West Africa, with populations recorded in Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and southwestern Mali. The tree can reach heights of up to 15 metres, and its evergreen broad leaves are smooth and glossy with a characteristic glossy green underside. The shrub or small tree produces small, white to pale pink flowers in dense terminal clusters, and later develops a globular fruit that turns bright red when ripe.
Locally, bantoue is valued for both its edible fruit and medicinal properties. Indigenous communities traditionally grind
