There is no single formal template governing bagatelles; the label signals a non-serious, approachable character rather than a strict genre.

The term comes from the French bagatelle, meaning trifling matter, toy, or amusement. In musical usage from the 18th century onward, bagatelles were small, easily accessible pieces published for amateur players or for quick, characterful repertoire within a larger collection. While often brief, bagatelles can vary in tempo, form, and key, ranging from simple song-like tunes to more decorative, capricious miniatures.

In practice, bagatelles became a popular designation in the Classical and Romantic eras for short piano pieces that stood apart from more serious sonatas or études. Notable examples include Beethoven’s Bagatelles Op. 33 and Op. 119, both sets of six pieces for solo piano, and Chopin’s Six Bagatelles, Op. 47. These works helped establish the bagatelle as a recognized category of refined but accessible piano music.
