backburning
Backburning, also known as controlled burning or prescribed fire, is a wildfire suppression technique where a controlled fire is intentionally set in the path of an approaching wildfire. The purpose of backburning is to remove fuel, such as dry grass, leaves, and other vegetation, ahead of the main fire. This creates a firebreak, a strip of land with no combustible material, which the wildfire cannot cross.
The process is carried out by trained fire crews who assess weather conditions, fuel types, and terrain
Backburning is a complex operation with inherent risks. If not managed properly, it can escape containment
